Quito

Quito

Quito

As I mentioned we ended up renting a car and heading to Quito, capital city of Ecuador and a very interesting place. One aspect is that it is located in a valley surrounded by the mountains of the Andes. so that it is way spread out but not only on the valley...up the hills,too...some parts are literally "hanging" uphill! Many old houses and buildings, especially in th older part of the city. Very interesting but very, very crowded.

Our objective here was to visit the Equator Line and off we went to search for it. In the old times it was believed that the Line passed through the northern section of Quito, in the Province of Pichincha, in the town of San Antonio and here there is still what they call "Ciudad Mitad del Mundo", a Museum, a Planetarium, restaurant selling typical food, stores selling local artifacts and souveniers and a 30m tall monument, built between 79 and 82, representing the line in the place of an older one which was transferred to the town of Calcali, 7km from the original site.

With modern GPS systems, GIS technology products like Google Earth and further studies they came to verify that the Line was 240m to the north of the old line. Presently there is a private run project called Quitsato - in the town of Cayambe - 47km north of Quito which is carrying out several different research and at this site consists of a circular platform showing a sun dial indicating the solstices and equinoxes, the cardinal references as well as the Equator Line.

Alaska is such a wonderful destination for tourists. It has meaningful attractions to explore and have an offensive time. I like its parks, lakes and glaciers.
