From Guatemala to El Salvador

From Guatemala we entered El Salvador through the border town of Las Chinamas at 11 in the morning and the crossing happens on the same bridge over the  Paz river. Same paperwork regarding the temporary vehicle import forms to fill out. The advantage here is that as of 2006 there is an agreement among the 4 countries of Central America (Guatemala, El Salvador. Nicaragua and Costa Rica) in which the tourist who legally enters one of these countries doesn't have to have any visa or permit in the other 3 as far as your permit is still valid and they are normally issued for 90 days, so no paperwork as far as passports are concerned...better!

In its prehispanic History El Salvador also had the influence of the Mayas, Chorti and Toltecas, so here too there are several archaeological sites but more important here are the ancient churches some of them real work of art. Many local crafts like colorful weaving, clay figures picturing religious facts and typical artifacts using local raw materials as corn husk, bones and teeth of fish and shark, coconut. Regarding tourism there  are the Ruta de Las Flores(flower route), Ruta Artesanal (Crafts route), Ruta de La Paz(Peace route) where is located the town of Perquin - scene of the civil conflict in El Salvador and considered the capital of the revolutionary movement. Here there are several hills and mountains, rivers, waterfalls and volcanos (one of them called Izalco - same name as the hotel we stayed at).

Today, september 15th, they commemorate 182 years of Independence, or as they say here "Liberty Cry Day". These five countries - Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua and Costa Rica - constituted Centroamerica as if it was one country - under Hispanic dominion - and their first capital was La Antigua, in Guatemala(remember I mentioned that in the page of Guatemala...)and this is why all of them commemorate their independence in the same day - september 15th. The only two separate are Belize and Panama.

From Friday to Sunday we stayed at Hotel Izalco Cabana Club - Blvd Costa del Sol, km.65.5 - where we parked the RV and had water and electricity provided and were allowed to use all hotel facilities like the nice beachfront  pool, restaurant with varied choices and we were able to try a typical meal called "pupusas" which were not included in the menu but since I mentioned I would like to try them the hotel manager Edgardo made an effort to have them delivered to us at dinner time so that we would have the chance to taste it. It's similar to Brazilian "polenta" stuffed with cheese and  pork meat. Very good! By the way Edgardo was the person who welcomed us and made his best so that we would have a pleasing stay. And if you happen to be around, make sure you stop and stay at Hotel Izalco that we are sure Manager Edgardo and his efficient staff will do their best to please you. Thanks Edgardo for everything...muchas gracias por todo!

Tomorow, Monday september 16th, we will cross over to Honduras, cross the country and go directly into Nicaragua. Daniel asked me to add that the local currency is the American dollar...

We are enjoying your commentary and photos! You two are awesome. What an adventure for you. Some of the roads look better than in Brazil.
