Route 66

This iconic route crosses half of the US from California to Chicago, Illinois. Substituted by the modern highways there still are some stretches that can be ridden and where one actually returns to the past when traveling in a car meant also to enjoy the ride and the view and the uniqueness of the small towns.

In Oklahoma state there is still most of the route and here we visited the National Route 66 Museum in Elk City - which is queit comprehensive and interesting. We crossed by Clinton - Route 66 Museum (more regional); Weatherford - with its windmills, Lucille's service station/ Road house diner; El Reno - El Reno Hotel (1892) and Fort Reno; Yukon - Chisholm Trail and Garth Brooks birthplace; Oklahoma City - where there are several attractions and here we have visited the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum; Arcadia - with the newest attraction on 66 called POPS - service station and convenience store which shows a huge number of pop bottles from all over the world and there is a great number of different flavors to taste, the Round Barn (built in 1898); Chandler - Route 66 Interpretive Center, Historic Phillips 66 Service Station, St.Cloud Hotel; Stroud - Rock Cafe - whose owner was the inspiration for Pixar movie Cars' character "Sally"; Tulsa - big city, known as Oklahoma's oil capital and where there are several Route 66 attractions - Meadow Gold sign (neon), Blue Dome Service Station, Cain's Ballroom, Route 66 Village...among others.

We camped in Claremore at a KOA near the Cherokee Casino and Horsetrack. Here in Claremore is the Jim Davis Arms and Historical Museum and the Will Rogers Memorial Museum. He was a famous comedian and "rope man" .
